Florida Opportunity Scholars VISTA
Gisselle Bermudez serves as the AmeriCorps VISTA for the Machen Florida Opportunity Scholars Program. As an AmeriCorps VISTA, Gisselle works primarily with pre-college outreach for underrepresented youth in the community, as well as assisting first generation students.
She was born and raised in Miami, Florida and is of Puerto Rican and Mexican descent. Gisselle earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a Minor in Latin American Studies from the University of Florida in 2016. Though not a recipient of the Machen Florida Opportunity Scholarship, Gisselle was the first in her family to pursue a higher education. She served as an Ambassador for Multicultural and Diversity Affairs (MCDA) under Student Affairs for two years. In addition to her experience with MCDA, Gisselle was heavily involved in the Hispanic-Latinx community at the University of Florida and greater Gainesville community. In the future, Gisselle hopes to serve as a Peace Corps Youth in Development and Education volunteer before pursuing a Ph.D in Latin American Studies.
