Jinyu Shao grew up in a rural area of the southeastern part of China. Ever since she can remember, she's been learning about the importance of education. That's why she never stopped dreaming about going to college. Jinyu is very grateful that the Florida Opportunity Scholars program provided her with the opportunity to make her dream come true at the University of Florida. She has greatly benefited from the opportunities and assistance UF offers its students.
Jinyu is currently majoring in exploratory engineering. She's on the pre-med track and plans to attend medical school at UF upon graduation. Jinyu serves as an active student on campus through her involvement with the Freshmen Leadership Program and the Chinese American Student Association. She also volunteers at Shands Hospital. In striving to give back to the program, Jinyu plans to become an Florida Opportunity Scholars mentor because she hopes to ensure that future Florida Opportunity Scholars students can make the best use of everything that is available to them.
"It's more than just a scholarship to me," Jinyu said. "I've grown so much as an individual through the Florida Opportunity Scholars program."Tweet
