Stefani Broome

As a senior, Stefani Broome has had the opportunity to look back on her experiences with utter appreciation for the benefits she has received as an FOS recipient.  While at the University of Florida, Stefani has pursued a study abroad experience to Israel, joined the Florida Opportunity Scholars Academy of Leadership, and has now found her true calling in elementary education.  Stefani attributes many of the experiences to the staff of FOS and fellow Florida Opportunity Scholars students.

As Stefani explains, there are numerous co-curricular organizations and opportunities that have spurred her academic career to success and have allowed her to network throughout the University of Florida.  The Florida Opportunity Scholars Academy of Leadership (FOSAL) has pushed Stefani to step outside of her comfort zone, speaking in front of large groups of people, practicing her interviewing skills, preparing her resume for the job market, and anticipating what will come in her future.  This network has opened doors and helped her to meet other FOS students, FOSAL retreat mentors, and develop her leadership skills.

Currently a Religion major and Family, Youth, and Community Sciences minor at the University of Florida, Stefani is developing an understanding of the difference she can make in the classroom.  In Stefani’s spare time, she volunteers in local elementary classrooms, not because she is required to, but because she loves the teaching environment and the impact she can make on her students.  Because of the FOS program Stefani has had the opportunity to continue this passion in the global environment.  During a study abroad trip, Stefani found herself teaching English to non-English speaking students in Israel, yet loving the challenge and satisfaction from the experience.  It is during these teaching moments that Stefani feels the most at ease and fulfilled.

Because of her experiences through the FOSAL program, Stefani has been able to put her learning into practice and bring leadership and change to her sorority, Theta Alpha, a Christian sorority on campus.  As president of Theta Alpha, Stefani has been able to develop her sorority’s mission and be a leader by example.  Additionally, she has made a difference in the Gainesville community as an Assistant Director for Gator Global Educators. Through this organization, Stefani has impacted the lives of Gainesville middle school students, bringing international college students to their classrooms and facilitating their learning experiences.

As for her future, Stefani is looking into ways to become an educator and make her passion into a career.  She plans to take her leadership, international experiences, and love for students wherever she ends up.  For now, Stefani is simply grateful to be at UF, be a first generation student, and still have the chance to study abroad, be leader in a sorority, be a part of the FOSAL leadership development program, and excel during her college experience.
